About Us

Natraj School of Dance is an Indian Classical Dance School based in Lower Hutt established in 1999 by Mrs. Prabha Ravi; Founder, Director and Choreographer. The school specializes in teaching Bharatanatyam, one of the oldest classical dance forms of India in the Pandanallur and Kancheepuram Ellappa style.

It is a community focused dance school that exists to promote the Indian art and culture in New Zealand. It provides an opportunity for interested people to learn this art form irrespective of their ethnic background, age or gender.

The school has trained over 600 students in the past 18 years predominantly in Wellington and also in Rotorua.  A number of students have successfully graduated from the school. Students of the school are regular performers at several iconic events in NZ such as ethnic festivals at the NZ parliament, Asia NZ Foundation and city council events, corporate, NGO and award functions, Multi Ethnic Council and Community events, New Zealand Police ethnic events, Rotary and Lions club events, commonwealth observance day, United Nations of New Zealand conference, religious celebrations and events at retirement villages. Students of the school have also performed in Australia, India and USA for various dance festivals.

The school is well known in the community for creating new innovative dance pieces to suit the occasion.  The school has also choreographed fusion dance numbers with Samoan fire dancers, Sri Lankan Kandyan dancers, Western Classical Ballet dancers, North Indian dancers without diluting the purity of the Bharatanatyam art form.
