About Us
Natraj School of Dance is an Indian Classical Dance School based in Lower Hutt established in 1999 by Mrs. Prabha Ravi; Founder, Director and Choreographer. The school specializes in teaching Bharatanatyam, one of the oldest classical dance forms of India in the Pandanallur and Kancheepuram Ellappa style.
It is a community focused dance school that exists to promote the Indian art and culture in New Zealand. It provides an opportunity for interested people to learn this art form irrespective of their ethnic background, age or gender.
The school has trained over 600 students
in the past 18 years predominantly in Wellington and also in Rotorua. A number of students have successfully
graduated from the school. Students of the school are regular performers at
several iconic events in NZ such as ethnic festivals at the NZ parliament, Asia
NZ Foundation and city council events, corporate, NGO and award functions,
Multi Ethnic Council and Community events, New Zealand Police ethnic events,
Rotary and Lions club events, commonwealth observance day, United Nations of
New Zealand conference, religious celebrations and events at retirement
villages. Students of the school have also performed in Australia, India and
USA for various dance festivals.
The school is well known in the
community for creating new innovative dance pieces to suit the occasion. The school has also choreographed fusion
dance numbers with Samoan fire dancers, Sri Lankan Kandyan dancers, Western
Classical Ballet dancers, North Indian dancers without diluting the purity of
the Bharatanatyam art form.
